It will be a new look for local residents when they take to the ice at the High Level Arena, as new boards are currently being installed at the facility.
The old boards were fully removed on Wednesday, July 22.
“The new arena boards are going to be a welcomed addition to the arena and will provide a safe playing area,” said Mayor Crystal McAteer. “It was brought to the attention of Council that the old boards and gates were becoming an issue. Council had to be certain that as we work towards a new facility, that the new boards could be removed and reused.”
With the new boards, some minor changes are being made to the angles in the corners to conform to regulations. Additionally, spectators will be treated to a better view of the ice with a larger viewing area. Changes are also being made to improve the players and penalty boxes, and changes to the gates will ensure they are easier and safer for users. The overall design puts user safety first.
The boards were marked for replacement back in 2017 as part of a proposed upgrade project. However, those upgrades were put on hold when it was determined there were foundational issues with the building. A new arena is now part of the plans for the Town’s proposed Multi-Use Complex. These new boards are designed for mobility and could be moved to be part of a new facility.
