A new crosswalk in front of Spirit of the North School is going to make crossing 102 Street an illuminating experience.
The Town of High Level has just finished installing a new $9,000 lit crosswalk in the area to help make crossing the busy residential street much safer.
There have been concerns with safety in the past around the crossing, which sees a high volume of traffic due to its proximity to the school as well as several parks in the area.
The crosswalk is a prototype for the Town and is one of three crosswalks currently planned for the community.
“This particular crosswalk is both solar-powered and wireless, which significantly cuts down on our installation costs and time involved,” said Keith Straub, Director of Operations.
The run time for the crosswalk is currently 20 seconds, which appears to be more than enough time to cross the street. However, that time can be altered as needed, and Straub said timing is something the Town will be keeping an eye on.
This is the third crossing upgrade to the area in recent years. In early 2019, the Town added new lights to the crossing – and then added some more lights to enhance visibility at the crosswalk later that same year.
Two other crosswalks with different designs are in the works – also prototypes, with the goal of finding the type of crosswalk that works best for High Level. This new crosswalk was paid for out of left over funds from the operations budget in 2020. The other two crosswalks are planned for Chinchaga Drive where it meets the community walking path, and in front of High Level Public School to replace the 40-year-old crosswalk that was previously located on that site.
