Home Occupation

A home occupation is defined as an accessory use within a dwelling unit, or its garage that involves a business operated by a resident of the dwelling unit, which is not inclusive of businesses that may cause offensive noise, odour, traffic or generally serve as a nuisance to adjacent residential landowners.

The business shall be incidental and secondary to the use of the building for dwelling purposes and does not change the essential residential character or appearance of the building. Home Occupations are discretionary uses and require an approved Development Permit. Home Occupations also have a mandatory 21-day neighbourhood notification period – this process is completed by the Town via mail to all adjacent property owners. If no valid appeals are submitted to the Subdivision and Development Appeal Board by the end of the 21-day notification period, you are able to apply for your Business Licence [if required], and then permitted to start your Home Occupation.
