This Proposed Annexation conforms with the Town of High Level’s 2022-2026 Strategic Plan through:
Goal #1 – Vibrant Economy – Opportunities generated that deliver economic growth, diversity, and strengthen our sustainability for both the Town and the region.
Transportation is a key driver of High Level’s economy supporting the community’s business and industry.
The High Level Airport is an important component of the region’s transportation infrastructure. Annexing the Airport means that these lands fall within the Town’s Development Authority jurisdiction, which allows the Town to establish appropriate land use zoning and development guidelines, and work towards attracting more diverse economic opportunities for the community and region.
Goal #2 – Infrastructure, Growth and Reliability – Community needs are met with reliable infrastructure and attractive shared spaces.
Included in the land proposed to be annexed is Footner Lake, the Town of High Level’s raw water source.
Bringing Footner Lake into the Town of High Level through the annexation allows the Town to control land use and development around the lake including its tributaries and outflows. This allows the Town to protect its raw water source and work with the Government of Alberta on measures to stabilize the quality of water coming from Footner Lake.
Bringing the lands where the existing wastewater sewage lagoon facility is located into the Town of High Level (which is owned and operated by the Town) allows the Town to effectively address this aging core infrastructure, by providing additional flexibility to expand this asset to the north on lands now owned by the Town.
